We moved to our lifestyle block on Old West Coast Road in 2007 having moved to New Zealand from the UK in 2006. Our home is located about  bought two dexter cattle to help keepthe grass in check, but also to support the ongoing breeding line of these small cattle. The block had an established olive grove which has taken a number of years to produce our own olive oil. Carol always had a dream to grow lavender and use the oil to make soaps and creams. We purchased 600 lavender plants in late 2009. Carol decided to have three varieties, 200 of pacific blue,  200 super c and 200 Grosso. We started out planting in 2010 after some research to check the ground conditions were ok, the block consisting of very light sandy soil that was originally the old river bed. We became members of NZLGA to ensure that we were able to tap into the wealth of knowledge other lavender growers could provide. We hand planted the 600 plants in a corner of one of our paddocks using weed matting to help control the weeds. The plants took a couple of years to establish but we have had a healthy harvest ever since. We have now hand harvested each year drawing in the help and support of our two sons and anyone else that has a morning to spare. Having the three different varieties means that harvesting can be staggered helping to manage the harvesting period. The pacific blue is the first to mature followed by the super c and then the grosso. We have been fortunate to receive recognition of the quality of the oil the plants have produced winning the NZLGA silver award in 2015, 2016 and 2018. Carol makes her own products ,soaps , hand creams sleep balms lip balms etc. everything is done by hand, from harvest to product. Visitors are welcome to call and sit or stroll amongst the lavender and enjoy the gardens. The best time to visit is late November through to Mid January.
