Lavendell

About us

Lavendell is a small lavender farm located 6km out of Katikati in the Bay of Plenty, with a fine view of the eastern side of the Kaimai ranges. Its owners are Helena, a trained teacher and former church worker, and her husband Pieter, a retired civil engineer.

The Lavendell dream began in early 2015 when we were living in urban Pukekohe.  Helena decided to develop a business based on lavender, and initially started out making hand-crafted products with a lavender theme.  A supply of essential oil and rubbed lavender was purchased from Leafy Hollow and early products were sachets, lavender wheat bags, lavender eye pads, scented candles (since discontinued) and more.  These were sold through “lavender parties” and at the Pukekohe farmers’ market.  But the dream also included growing our own lavender.

This prompted us to look for a space where we could set something up, and we were attracted to the Tauranga area to be closer to family.  We bought our present property in September 2016 and planted our first block of lavender, a mixture of Pacific Blue and Grosso plants supplied by Leafy Hollow, in the autumn of 2017, with another block a year later.

We distilled our first oil (and learned the skill!) using someone else’s still in the summer of 2018/19.  We then bought our own still and Pieter has extracted oil on home base for the seasons since.

Helena still makes the same products Lavendell started out with, but the range has expanded to include home-grown essential oil (both varieties), bath soap, shampoo bars, liquid hand soap, lavender mist, eye masks and plants.

We do not have a shop on the property but may remedy that in the future.  However, visitors are welcome to come and buy (recommend to phone first). We can also be found at the weekly Katikati Plant & Produce Market (Fridays 3.30-5.30pm), the monthly Town & Country Market also in Katikati (2nd Saturday 9.00am-1.00pm), and the monthly Omokoroa Market (last Saturday of each month 9.00am-1.00 pm). Mail orders are also welcome.
